What is dry mouth (xerostomia)?

Dry mouth can be temporary or permanent and affects a significant number of adults. It occurs when salivary glands are unable to produce sufficient saliva, either due to lifestyle factors, ageing, medication use, or medical treatment.

Saliva helps to:

  • lubricate oral tissues
  • neutralise acids
  • support enamel remineralisation
  • reduce plaque build-up
  • protect against infections

When saliva is reduced, people may experience a range of oral health issues and daily discomforts.

Common signs of dry mouth

  • Burning tongue or cracked lips

  • Difficulty speaking, chewing or swallowing

  • Dry throat, especially at night

  • Disturbed sleep

  • Accelerated tooth decay and gum problems

  • Increased plaque and bad breath

Who is affected by dry mouth?

Dry mouth affects diverse populations, and Xerostom has been developed with these groups in mind:

  • Older adults, where natural salivary flow may decline
  • Snorers and mouth breathers, particularly at night
  • People taking multiple medications (polypharmacy-induced dry mouth)
  • Patients undergoing cancer treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy

In cancer care specifically:

  • Over 75% of advanced cancer patients experience dry mouth
  • Over 80% rate the severity as moderate to severe
