What is bruxism (teeth grinding)?

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, most commonly during sleep. It is estimated to affect 8–10% of adults, with higher prevalence reported during periods of stress.

Common signs include:

Tooth wear or fractures
Disturbed or unrefreshing sleep

During sleep, jaw muscles can generate forces significantly higher than those used for chewing, placing excessive load on teeth and restorations.

Yes. SOVA Night Guard can be used with orthodontic appliances when fitted under the supervision of a dental professional, as orthodontic devices must be protected during the moulding process. Its remouldable design allows the guard to adapt as teeth move during treatment, making it suitable for orthodontic patients when professionally supervised.

Clinically supported performance

STUDY FORMAT & PARTICIPANTS

Randomised controlled clinical trial comparing the SOVA® Night Guard with a professionally made Michigan splint — a dentist-fabricated hard acrylic night guard commonly regarded as the clinical gold standard for bruxism management.

Participants & duration: 61 adult participants with sleep bruxism. Study duration: 4 months. Participants were randomly assigned to use either SOVA® or a Michigan splint.

KEY FINDINGS

Comparable clinical performance: The results demonstrate that SOVA® delivers a level of protection and performance comparable to a dentist-made night guard, while offering a slimmer profile and patient-fitted convenience. The study found no statistically significant difference between SOVA® and the professionally made Michigan splint in key clinical outcomes, including: retention and stability during use; material wear; periodontal health; user comfort and satisfaction.
